The Department of Experimental Plant Biology at the Faculty of Science, Charles University (Prague, Czech Republic), one of Europe’s oldest and most distinguished universities, invites applications for a postdoctoral position within our Research Group:
The position is funded by the OP JAK project CZ.02.01.01/00/22_008/0004581, TowArds Next GENeration Crops (TANGENC).
We are seeking a motivated early-career scientist who will contribute to advancing research in plant root biology, foster innovation, and engage actively in a collaborative academic environment. The successful candidate is expected to carry out high-quality, internationally competitive research, making effective use of the department’s and faculty’s core facilities.
The ideal candidate will have a solid publication record relative to career stage and a strong conceptual understanding of root development and function. Synergy with the group’s current research focus is highly desirable.
The successful candidate will join an established and supportive research team, with the opportunity to progressively develop their own research ideas and scientific independence. The position is funded by a specific research project (details to be provided).
The role offers:
A supportive and collaborative research environment
Opportunities to develop and shape your own research direction
Access to modern infrastructure and core facilities
Guidance and mentoring in applying for external funding
Opportunities to contribute to student supervision and mentoring
The opportunity for long-term involvement in the research group
While the position encourages increasing independence, the candidate will benefit from close interaction with experienced researchers and a mentoring environment.
The contract is renewable and provides an excellent opportunity to build a competitive academic profile and prepare for future career steps, including independent research position.
Informal inquiries and consultation with the group leader prior to application are encouraged.
Applications will be evaluated by a departmental committee, and shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview (in person or online).
The successful candidate should:
Hold a Ph.D. in plant biology or a related field (or be close to completion)
Demonstrate motivation, curiosity, and a proactive approach to research
Be able to work both independently and collaboratively
Have experience relevant to plant root biology or a closely related area
Show willingness to develop new skills and research directions
Previous postdoctoral experience is most welcome. Candidates with a clear interest in developing their own research profile are especially encouraged to apply.
A growing degree of independence is expected, and an interest in contributing to the future development and shaping the future direction of the research group is considered an advantage.
Required documents:
structured CV
list of scientific and publication activity
education credentials, proof of academic degrees and ranks
The Faculty of Science was established as an independent faculty in 1920 as a natural response to the development of modern natural sciences. Thanks to the tradition and breadth of its research, Charles University has become one of the highest-ranked research institutions not only in the Czech Republic but also in Central Europe as a whole.
Nature inspires us to explore, develop, and share knowledge across biology, chemistry, geology, geography, environmental sciences, and their interdisciplinary connections and applications.
This idea forms the foundation of the identity of the Faculty of Science, Charles University—a place where the tradition of the oldest university in Central Europe meets the dynamics of modern science.
