We seek a scientific leader who will advance research excellence, foster innovation in plant biology, and contribute to a dynamic and collaborative academic environment. The successful candidate is expected to establish an internationally competitive research program and to actively engage in teaching and mentoring, making effective use of the department’s and faculty’s core facilities.
Applicants should demonstrate strong expertise in plant developmental biology, with a particular focus on morphogenesis in response to environmental factors, alongside a broad and integrative understanding of plant biology.
Synergy with existing departmental research is highly desirable, particularly with the following groups:
Develop and lead an independent research program in plant development in the context of environmental factors
Operate with a high degree of scientific autonomy
Build and lead a research team (full-time commitment is expected), with the possibility of integrating into or taking over the research activities of the existing supportive research groups
The position offers:
Access to state-of-the-art infrastructure and core facilities
The possibility to negotiate institutional support (e.g., technical staff and/or Ph.D. student positions)
The possibility to supplement the starting salary with grant funding
A collaborative and stimulating research environment
The candidate is expected to:
Actively seek external research funding
Contribute to the department’s scientific activities
Participate in teaching and mentoring at undergraduate and graduate levels
The contract is renewable and provides a clear pathway toward a stable academic position and long-term leadership of an independent research group.
Applications will be evaluated by a departmental committee, including relevant group leaders. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview (in person or online).
Informal inquiries and prior consultation with the department leadership are encouraged:
Attachment 1: a track record of research funding, specifying grants obtained as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator
Attachment 2: a brief research proposal (maximum 3 pages including references) outlining future research plans, demonstrating scientific independence, and describing alignment with the research focus of the relevant groups in the Department of Experimental Plant Biology, Faculty of Science, Charles University
Attachment 3: contact details for at least two referees, or alternatively, two letters of recommendation
Applicants should demonstrate:
A strong publication record, including significant contributions as first and/or senior author
High scientific impact, as evidenced by citation metrics and/or field recognition
A proven track record of successful grant acquisition
Experience in supervising students and/or early-career researchers (considered an advantage)
Experience with the European or American academic environment is considered an advantage.
The Faculty of Science was established as an independent faculty in 1920 as a natural response to the development of modern natural sciences. Thanks to the tradition and breadth of its research, Charles University has become one of the highest-ranked research institutions not only in the Czech Republic but also in Central Europe as a whole.
Nature inspires us to explore, develop, and share knowledge across biology, chemistry, geology, geography, environmental sciences, and their interdisciplinary connections and applications.
This idea forms the foundation of the identity of the Faculty of Science, Charles University—a place where the tradition of the oldest university in Central Europe meets the dynamics of modern science.
